MODULE 4: NETWORKING

OVERCOMING THE FEAR FACTOR

The single hardest part of networking is just getting the courage to reach out to an adult or a professional. It is completely normal to feel nervous, but learning how to move past that fear is what separates successful people from the crowd. Read the scenario below.

The Scenario: David wanted to start his own business one day. His friend knew an experienced business owner named Ray who had built a highly successful company from scratch. David desperately wanted to talk to Ray to learn what to do and what to avoid, but he was terrified. He was worried Ray would think his questions were stupid or that he would be too busy to care.

Eventually, David realized he had nothing to lose. To beat his anxiety, he used The Three Ps:

  • Prepare: He researched Ray’s company online and looked up basic business startup costs first.

  • Practice: He wrote down specific questions in a notebook so he wouldn't freeze up.

  • Pull yourself together: He took a deep breath, made the call, and Ray gladly agreed to meet.

Because David was organized and didn't waste his time, Ray was actually incredibly flattered that a young person asked for his advice.

The Strategy Check:

1. Fill in the blank: David was terrified of looking foolish, but he beat his anxiety by doing his homework and making sure he was fully prepared before the meeting.

2. Fill in the blank: Most successful adults are actually happy to help a young person out, as long as you respect their time and use a clear plan or notebook to keep the talk on track.
