Why JobStart Exists
JobStart didn't begin as a business idea. It began with a simple observation that led to an important realization. One evening, a close friend and her 20-year-old son came to my home for dinner. As we greeted each other, I noticed he avoided eye contact, offered a weak handshake, and spoke so quietly that it was difficult to hear him. I could tell he wasn't disrespectful; he was simply nervous and unsure of himself.
One evening, a close friend's 20-year-old son came to my home for dinner. As we greeted each other, I noticed he avoided eye contact, offered a weak handshake, and spoke so quietly that it was difficult to hear him. I could tell he wasn't disrespectful, he was simply nervous and unsure of himself.
Before dinner, I spent a few minutes showing him how to make eye contact, greet someone with confidence, and offer a firm, professional handshake. We talked about first impressions and how something as simple as a greeting can influence the way an employer sees you before a single interview question is asked.
Later that evening, on the drive home, he turned to his mother and said, "How come Dad never taught me that?"
When she shared those words with me, they stayed with me. It was a reminder that many young people simply never have the opportunity to learn these skills. That conversation inspired me to dig deeper. I began researching the challenges young people face as they enter the workforce, and what I discovered was both surprising and concerning.
Every year, thousands of teenagers walk into their first job excited, nervous, and eager to do well. They have spent years learning math, science, history, and countless other subjects in school, yet very few have ever been taught what employers actually expect once they are hired.
Most young people don't lose their first job because they lack intelligence or ability. They struggle because no one has shown them the unwritten rules of the workplace. Simple habits such as arriving early, communicating professionally, and accepting feedback, taking initiative, and working as part of a team often determine whether a new employee succeeds or falls behind.
Parents want their teenagers to succeed. Educators work hard to prepare students for life after graduation. Employers hope to hire dependable young people who are ready to contribute. Yet there is often a gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations.
That realization became the inspiration for JobStart.
Our mission is to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace reality by giving young people the practical skills, confidence, and professional habits they need to succeed. Through engaging, real-world instruction, JobStart helps students prepare not only to land their first job, but to become employees that employers value, remember, and trust.
